We are
experienced systems, software and DevOps engineers dedicated to hosting sophisticated e-commerce projects.
We work
with highly available systems and services in our own data center infrastructures and in the cloud of Amazon Web Services and Azure.
We have
more than 20 years of experience in hosting and developing business-critical web applications in B2B and B2C.
Let’s go! We are located in a former Kontor building in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt warehouse district and look out of our office windows directly onto the canals, called Fleete.
The ambience – UNESCO World Heritage! – is something to boast about in the family circle (between you and me: the hooting barges are sometimes quite loud, but hey, the canals are great and want to be explored). Our rooms are spread over two floors: the ground floor is pleasantly cool even in summer, while the 2nd floor offers access to the fire escape leading to the idyllic inner courtyard. We also use this cosy courtyard for a drink together after work.
But let’s take a look inside. Even before coronavirus, we had the option of working from home if necessary, but now many of us have got used to it, turning up at the office once or twice a week or working entirely from home.
That is why we have changed the room concept in the office to so-called ‘shared desks’. Depending on mood, weather or communication needs, you can book a workstation with two monitors, mouse and keyboard.
We don’t use open plan offices, there are two desks per room, also we have several meeting rooms for larger groups and smaller lounges where you can spend a relaxed lunch break, for example.
So much for the premises, but what about the teams and people? We have five departments in total: System and Network Administration, Software Engineering, Presales & Project and Service Management, Sales and Marketing and Business Assistance.
It is important to us that the individual teams don’t just work on their own, but also work together. Examples? Our admins also set up our workstations, so if a special request or a problem arises, there is always a sympathetic ear and solutions available. This also applies to software development – one of our most important tools is the open source software tine for digital collaboration and process organisation, for which Metaways plays a lead development role: Feature requests or bug reports from our own ranks play a major role here and are dealt with accordingly.
You might have guessed it from the departments: Many of us are (at least) nerds at heart. We like Open Source and the idea behind it.
Want some examples? We use open source solutions on our systems. Our in-house groupware is fully licensed under the AGPLv3 copyleft licence, and we can decide whether we prefer to use Linux or MacOS as the operating system for the workstation. Windows are also ok – but actually only those towards the yard or Fleet.
We don’t chase after every trend, but we always keep our eyes open to what’s going on in the IT world and then assess what really helps us and is worth using. It helps that we enjoy some leeway and are supported when we want to put ideas into practice or simply can’t make progress on our own. Despite our love of working independently, teamwork is important to us. There are regular team events (for the people who are up for it), simply to get out and enjoy a nice time together.
Do we want to gossip about the bosses? Okay! It’s really ‘bad’. Our managing directors have a social conscience and always put people first. They are in the midst of the day-to-day business, lend a hand, can listen and thus find solutions in dialogue with employees without being stuck in their own way of thinking. To go one better: All of this ensures that we really feel at home at Metaways and there are more than a dozen employees who have been on board for 10 years or more.
